Members' Exhibitions
Members’ Exhibitions at PAAM represent the work of contemporary artist-members of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Many of these artists live on Cape Cod either full-time or for part of the year. While the work varies greatly in media and approach, each artist-member joins a long roster of distinguished artists who have studied, taught, and exhibited at PAAM over the past 94 years.
Juried
In 1914, a group of visionary artists and local townspeople came together to form the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. This group recognized the need for an established arts institution on the Outer Cape. Today, PAAM continues to present juried exhibitions of artist-members’ works. Each show reflects the aesthetic judgment and curatorial eye of invited jurors.
Open
In the 1970’s, the PAAM membership voted to present “open” exhibitions, allowing any and all members to exhibit their work in PAAM’s galleries throughout the year. Members’ Open Exhibitions represent an eclectic and extensive body of work displayed in “salon” style that is, works that are stacked and tend to blanket the walls, versus the minimalist presentation most often seen in contemporary art galleries and museums. This practice was begun in Paris, France in the 19th century, where work was hung floor to ceiling and great paintings rubbed shoulders with the work of new and evolving artists. In the past 30 years, Members’ Open Exhibitions have become integral to our exhibition schedule. We’re sure you’ll find work that engages, amuses, and provokes.

Art of the Garden Members Invitational Exhibition
The Art of the Garden
Members’ Invitational Exhibition
Duration: June 27 July 27, 2008
Opens: June 27, 8 10pm
| Nineteen artist-members have been invited to participate in PAAM’s 2008 Art of the Garden Exhibition. Selected artists were asked to interpret works from the permanent collection, applying their own style and personal aesthetic to collection favorites. The result is an intriguing exhibition of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper that draws inspired lines of relevancy from the Provincetown Art Colony’s past into its present. The exhibition coincided with the 11th Annual Secret Garden Tour, a fundraising event that supports the educational and cultural initiatives of PAAM and provides funding for public programs throughout the year. |

Drop-Off: July 29, 12-4pm
Opening: August 1, 8 10; bids start closing on Aug. 31 at 3:30
Duration: August 1 August 31, 2008
The Annual 12x12 Exhibition and Silent Auction is an exciting event that draws artists and collectors together in support of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
Works by emerging and established artists hang side by side in this Members’ Open Exhibition, expressing a high level of achievement and a wide variety of subjects and styles.
This is a perfect opportunity for collectors to view a broad range of local talent, and an exceptional venue for emerging artists seeking visibility. Bidding starts at $100, climbing by demand throughout the one-month exhibition until the final hour of the silent auction. By participating in this fundraiser, artists generously agree to donate fifty percent or more of their final sale to PAAM an outstanding contribution that funds year-round exhibitions and educational programming.
Artist-members may pick-up a free 12x12 inch Masonite panel at the PAAM Front Desk during open hours for as long as supplies last. Entries must be received on the designated drop-off day ready to hang unframed, dry, and without a hanging device. Artists will be notified in the event that their piece is sold, and checks for their rightful percentage will be sent by mail. Call 508.487.1750 for further details.

Now is the best time to join the PAAM Circle, or to renew
your membership in this group of PAAM’s strongest supporters,
because we have planned several special events that you will want
to attend. All events are by invitation only.
July 20 the Museum closes for the PAAM Circle Annual Event
scheduled from 3 to 5pm. This is a fabulous afternoon that includes
hors d’oeuvres catered by Cosmos, and a performance
by Katie Lynch Koglin. As the only harpist at The Boston Conservatory
and Berklee College of Music, for a few years Koglin
played in their numerous ensembles and recording sessions. She
also co-directed the Boston Urban Harp Pilot Program at the
Roland Hayes School of Music in Roxbury. A chance to socialize
with artists and ardent art supporters, the event is generously
underwritten by Circle members John Guerra and Jay Coburn.
August 7 the Museum closes for the PAAM Circle Preview
Partyscheduled 6 to 8pmfor the Herman Maril exhibition;
his relationship with Provincetown began in 1934. The dunes,
flats, harbor, fishermen, weirs and boats were some of Maril’s
subjects for half a century. Get a sneak preview of the exhibition
before it opens to the public, and participate in a gallery
talk with the exhibition curator, Christine McCarthy. This is a
catered event that features a performance by the always cheerful
Zoe Lewis.
August 14 the Museum closes at 6pm for the PAAM Circle
to get a sneak preview of the Afro Bop Alliance. Enjoy the
sounds of this exciting Latin Jazz septet from Annapolis, who
will also perform during the Provincetown Jazz Festival. These
talented horn and rhythm musicians have been thrilling mid-
Atlantic audiences with their infectious polyrhythmic grooves,
harmonic colorings and improvisational lines since the mid-
90s. Mojitos anyone?
