Altered Books with Sian Robertson

July 19 @ 9:30 am 12:30 pm

< Back to Workshops

Wednesday-Friday, July 19-21, 9:30am-12:30pm

3 sessions | $230 for members $250 for non-members

During this hands-on workshop participants will learn about the practice of creating art from books by looking at the work of other artists and by creating work of their own.

They will consider the elements of books – pages, cover, text, illustrations – and explore using them as source material. From blocking out words on a single page of a novel to create a new narrative or poem, to the excavation of dozens of pages to reveal text and pictures from deep within a textbook, from using the cover of a book as a starting point for a collage or painting, to distorting pages by folding, tearing, rolling, carving, cutting, and more to create an entirely new object, participants will delve into the many different ways to alter books. No previous collage or mixed media experience is necessary.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST

Sian Robertson is a self-taught artist who grew up in Wales, in the UK, and has lived on the Outer Cape for over 20 years. She primarily works with used maps and atlases – cutting, folding, tearing, pasting, and more, to create both 2D and 3D work. Robertson likes to say that a beautiful map makes her heart race and her hand reach for her X-acto knife. Since 2015 she has had solo shows almost annually in galleries in Provincetown, as well as being part of many juried and group shows in galleries and arts institutions in Provincetown, across Cape Cod, and in Boston. Robertson also works with other artists to help them create and maintain their own websites.
