SUMMARY:Aric Attas // Symbiotic: Winter Song – Tree Music in the Garden (Day 2)
DESCRIPTION:Experience the music of plants!\n\n\n\nThis is the third in a suite of sound art installations titled The Four Seasons Suite: Tree Music in the Garden by sound artist Aric Attas. Emerging from the success of Summer Song\, installed in PAAM’s Sculpture Garden during the 2025 Secret Garden Tour in July\, this evolving suite will explore the sounds of Summer\, Autumn\, Winter\, and Spring. Together\, these works celebrate the changing beauty of Provincetown\, creating a place for reflection and discovery throughout the year. Autumn Song was presented at PAAM in October. \n\n\n\nNow\, Winter Song – Tree Music in the Garden turns the natural space of PAAM’s Sculpture Garden into an immersive experience in the thin light of the coldest season. It’s a celebration of wonder\, perception\, and our deep-rooted connection to the constant change of the living world. \n\n\n\nUsing custom-designed electronic instruments and sensors\, Attas draws on the bioelectric energy patterns within the large American Elm tree that towers over PAAM’s Sculpture Garden. Signals produced by the plants’ own living processes are transformed in real time into harmonic tones\, chimes\, and ambient layers. The result is an evolving sonic tapestry where trees sing in harmony with birdsong\, water\, wind\, and ambient human-made sounds. \n\n\n\nVisitors are invited to come and go throughout the day\, take in the austerity of the leafless tree\, and let the sounds unfold. It’s a meditative experience—an opportunity to slow down\, listen deeply\, and connect with the natural world. \n\n\n\nPAAM and Aric Attas gratefully acknowledge the following donors for their generous support of this installation: Diane Ahrens; Bonnie Catena; Andrea Cordova & Andrea Ricker; Leslie & Larry Haatvedt; Marie Hernandez; Bradley Lorimier & Joan Ohl; Marcy Purdy; Abby Walters [Go to paam.org/donate to add your support\, noting “Attas” in the comments section.] \n\n\n\nArtist Talks with Aric Attas\n\n\n\nFriday\, January 16th\, at 1pm\, 3pm\, and 7pm \n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 17th\, at 1pm and 3pm \n\n\n\nIn the Sculpture Garden itself\, Attas will share the creative process and the natural phenomena that make Winter Song possible. His practice blends cutting-edge technology with poetic intuition to explore unseen and unheard dimensions of the world around us. Attas’ sound installations incorporate generative ambient music\, using data input from the natural world\, including living plants and collected field recordings from Cape Cod\, sub-tropical Central Florida\, and beyond. Learn more at: healingpowerofcreativity.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAric Attas\, Symbiotic {American Elm – Winter}\, 2025; Aric Attas\, Symbiotic {American Elm – Autumn}\, 2025; Aric Attas\, Symbiotic {American Elm – Summer}\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Blanche Lazzell and Provincetown: Advancing American Modernism
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist\, organized by the Art Museum of West Virginia University and generously supported by Art Bridges.\n\n\n\nBlanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist explores the pioneering artist’s lifelong pursuit of translating Modernism into an American art form and celebrates her largely unsung achievements in championing abstraction in the United States through painting and printmaking. \n\n\n\nJoin us online for a presentation and Q+A session with PAAM’s CEO\, Christine McCarthy and exhibition curator\, Robert Bridges. They’ll discuss Lazzell’s work and her shift from European-derived modernism to her development of an American style before opening the virtual room up for questions. \n\n\n\nPre-Registration is required\, please use the form below. You will receive a Zoom link the morning of the lecture. \n\n\n\nRobert Bridges currently serves as the curator of the Art Museum of West Virginia University\, with collection holdings of over 4\,000 works of art. Bridges has curated more than a dozen museum exhibitions since the museum’s opening in 2015. Exhibitions include Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist\, Paintings and Sculptures by Sally and Peter Saul\, Shepard Fairey: Work Against the Clampdown\, a solo exhibition by Nina Chanel Abney\, Independent Vision: Self-Taught Artists from Appalachia\, and Studio Window: The Prints of Grace Martin Taylor. From 2001 to 2015\, he organized over 80 exhibits in the Mesaros Galleries at the College of Creative Arts. Among them are the international exhibition Ceramic Art from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute and two national exhibitions featuring the work of American Modernist Blanche Lazzell. Bridges has written several book chapters and magazine articles. He is a co-editor of the book Blanche Lazzell\, The Life and Work of an American Modernist (2004) from WVU Press. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLoading…

SUMMARY:Artists Teaching Artists: Blanche Lazzell\, An Educational Legacy // A Gallery Talk with Artist Lynn Stanley
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Blanche Lazzell: Becoming an American Modernist\, organized by the Art Museum of West Virginia University and generously supported by Art Bridges. Included with $15 Museum admission\, free for PAAM members.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen the painter Blanche Lazzell called Provincetown home in 1918\, she rooted herself among a community of working artists who inspired and challenged each other.  \n\n\n\nProvincetown’s art colony had been established by trailblazing artist-teachers\, including the painter Charles Hawthorne\, who launched his summer school at the tip of Cape Cod in 1899.  Throughout her career\, Lazzell displayed a prescient ability to seek out and study with artists practicing within the modernist art movements of the early 20th century—including post impressionism\, cubism\, fauvism\, expressionism\, and abstraction.  As a teaching artist\, and through the example of her own work\, she has continued to inform and inspire generations of artists.   \n\n\n\nIn this lecture artist and educator Lynn Stanley will explore Lazzell’s work through the lens of these formative connections with artist-mentors and friends\, along with Lazzell’s legacy as an educator\, and her formidable influence as a master of the Provincetown Print. \n\n\n\nLynn Stanley is an artist\, educator\, and writer.  She received her BA from Smith College and her MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan. As a grant writer\, teaching artist\, and program developer she worked for two decades in non-profit arts administration\, including seventeen years with the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.  Stanley curated over sixty art exhibitions at PAAM\, with a focus on supporting the creativity of K-12 students and educators\, in collaboration with local artists and schools along Cape Cod. An award-winning educator and writer\, she’s applied her passion for arts education to generate exemplary programs for learners of all ages\, including professional development workshops and Visual Thinking Strategies training for K-12 teachers\, and the Art on the Edge\, Art Reach\, and Reaching Forward Mentor programs at PAAM. Stanley continues to be invested in arts education\, and the ways artists can support children\, teens\, and adults through the transformative power of human connection and creativity.  Examples of her work can be found at www.bisforbird.com \n\n\n\nImage: Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956)\, The White Petunia\, block cut 1932\, printed 1954\, color woodblock print\, 14 1/2 x 12 5/8 in.
