Coarse Refinement: The Collages of Henry Rothman, Provincetown and New York

This exhibition will be a retrospective of collages by Henry Rothman (1910-1990).

In his long career as an artist, Rothman created hundreds of collages in his studios in New York City and Provincetown, where he spent 40 summers living on the waterfront. Having studied in the late 1940s with Hans Hofmann, Rothman’s collages reflect Hofmann’s theory that abstract art has its origins in nature; his work follows the story of decomposition in both the natural and urban landscapes.
