In 1947, Paul Resika and two fellow students went up to Cape Cod to help paint their teacher Hans Hofmann’s new studio. In a sense, Resika is still painting houses — big blocks of rectangular color pushed up against the light of the sky and the masses of land and sea. In the tradition of his teacher, Resika once said that his paintings were never something; rather they “are” something — paintings that have their own independent existence from the landscape they imagine.
