Anthony Fisher: ReVisions

This multi-media exhibition will feature works on canvas and paper, an assortment of 3-D “Drawing Machines,” and a video projection created by the artist Anthony Fisher.

In 2015, Fisher’s work underwent a radical transformation while he recovered from ankle surgery. Forbidden to put the slightest pressure on his foot for six weeks, followed by months confined to sitting, Fisher found himself curious about the possibility of making drawings with the wheels of a chair on paper scattered on the studio floor. From this curiosity and confinement, his “Drawing Machines” were born. Fisher created five videos and a short film documenting the steady evolution of these machines and reenactments of his drawing and painting process.

From the artist: “At present, my working process is very close to a meditative act. My new studio process involves physical struggle, the law of gravity, chemistry, and ingenuity. I’ve found a “viral” means of mark-making that allows for hundreds, even thousands of marks, lines, and shapes to be thrown onto the paper or canvas all at once. My process is specifically designed for excess–with so many visual ideas emerging at once, the overwhelmingly vast majority are discarded. I want the unexpected, my goal is to spark ideas that otherwise wouldn’t appear with a more deliberative, considered approach. My first stage is all about quantity. Judgement, analysis, and editing occur in later stages.”
