Dynamic Florals in Oil with Douglas David

August 15 @ 9:30 am 3:30 pm

Thursday-Friday, August 15-16, 9:30am-3:30pm

2 sessions | $345 for members, $375 for non-members, $10 discount (total) for those who take both of Douglas’s workshops

Immerse yourself in the study of floral compositions, while learning (or honing) the basic principles of oil painting.

During this two-day workshop, we’ll create several compositions with floral arrangements that are both elegant and sophisticated; casual and relaxed. Suited to all levels, Douglas will guide memorable demonstrations and discussions on composition, massing, building, form, light and shadow, as well as knowing when a work is finished, according to your own style.

Day 1: After a brief morning intro, a very hands-on approach gets students mixing colors and preparing to paint. Students will work in their own style/technique so that the finished work is unmistakably theirs. Douglas will demonstrate color mixing using his palette, sharing the concepts that his work entails. Students will mix basic strings of color, accelerating comprehension on how color aids in composition. Students will work from fresh cut hydrangea or other available florals, and also from photos Douglas provides that include peonies, lilacs, hydrangea, and tulips.

Day 2: An incredible day of studio work will yield a good number of paintings. Your compositions can be as complicated or as simple as needed. Demos and individual discussions/ instruction will help each student to reach the preliminary goals they are striving to meet.

Plan to produce several paintings in this workshop, and walk away with solid painting principles to keep your floral practice thriving!

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST

Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves–tranquil country landscapes, sunrises and sunsets on his favorite beaches, a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies, a slice of watermelon on a checkered tablecloth. His paintings are beautiful, simple and timeless. After graduating with honors from Herron School of Art, Indiana University, Douglas went on to study for a number of years with Frank Mason, famed instructor from the Art Students League of New York and student of Frank Vincent DuMond.

Douglas’s teaching is a way of giving back and sharing some of his journey with those who choose to study with him. He loves to share insights into the DuMond Palette with his students and bases all of his teachings on classic principles. Douglas’s work has been chosen for many private and public collections, including the Vice President’s residence, the United States Embassy to Sierra Leone, and most recently, by request of Ambassador Donnelly, the United States Embassy to the Holy See (Vatican City).
