RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Robert Motherwell and Renate Ponsold Research Fellowship is a one-year, low-residency program that supports scholars conducting original research on the visual art and artists of Outer Cape Cod.

Fellows utilize PAAM’s collections, archives, and research resources to develop projects that contribute to the scholarly understanding of the region’s cultural history. By the conclusion of the fellowship, recipients are expected to present their findings in a public lecture and produce a publishable academic paper. Projects that broaden and diversify scholarship on Provincetown art and artists are strongly encouraged.

PhD holding applicants working as professors, curators, art history professionals, etc. pursuing independent research are encouraged to apply. The fellowship is also open to PhD students enrolled in accredited art history, curatorial, or related programs conducting dissertation research. Student applicants must receive university approval confirming that all degree requirements, aside from the dissertation, have been met prior to the fellowship start date. Applicants who individually qualify for this fellowship may submit applications with a research team. Additional team members may but do not need to individually qualify for the application to be eligible.

Applications are reviewed by a panel and evaluated based on the scholarly merit of the proposal, applicant’s ability to carry out the project, feasibility within the proposed timeline, demonstrated commitment to equity and accessibility, two letters of recommendation from art history professionals, alignment between PAAM’s resources and the applicant’s research goals.

Each year one fellow is awarded a stipend of up to $25,000 and a travel and housing allowance of up to $5,000. Please note the maximum stipend and travel and housing allowance potentially granted does not change if the applicant is an individual or research team. Fellows arrange their own travel and accommodations, with assistance available from PAAM as needed. While the program is low-residency, fellows are expected to spend time conducting research on-site in Provincetown.

Required application materials include: Research Summary, Research Proposal, Curriculum Vitae, Academic Transcripts (for all applicants other than senior scholars), and References.

Complete applications must be submitted online via forms found here. All materials must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. EST on June 1, 2026 for consideration. Join the mailing list below to receive periodic updates about this fellowship.
