Session 1/3: Figure Drawing and Painting Through The Eyes Of Hans Hofmann with Laura Shabott

Seminal artist/teacher Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) taught a fundamental theory of pushing and pulling a composition on a two-dimensional surface.

This principle is best understood when drawing and painting from life. Your workshop begins with a lecture on Hofmann’s work and continues with two and half hours of drawing and painting from a model with a group critique at the end. Each of you, no matter what your level of experience, will leave with original artwork and increased skills in composition, line and form.

This is the first session in Through the Eyes of: A Figure-Focused Workshop Series of Three with Laura Shabott. Take one, two, or all three!

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST

Provincetown based Laura Shabott makes paintings, drawings and collage that respond to nature with boldness, strength, and originality. She is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at Tufts, a Returning Resident at the Fine Arts Work Center and a recipient of the Building Capacity Grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. In addition to her studio practice, Shabott is passionate about teaching, empowering artists to thrive, and sharing Provincetown’s artistic legacy. She is represented by Berta Walker Gallery, Provincetown.
